Artist's Statement July, 2007
I believe that art, whether it is on the corner of a business card or covering the side of a building, is a way which I can bring beauty, reflection, and inspiration to a person which I may never have influenced otherwise. Human beings have an inherent love of beauty; the colors, the line, patterns and shapes; are all elements which I can use to tell a story or simply make something wonderful to look at. My inspirations range from Sergeant and Velázquez, and their ability to capture humanity in a brushstroke; to Klimt’s and Rivera's large–scale and graphic pieces. I am also influenced by my own love of books, from fairy tales to biographies to historic epics, and the way in which you can be transported. This is something I strive to capture in my painting.
I have 5years experience in freelance graphic design, creating business cards, magazine ads, and other print material for small business owners. I enjoy the close working relationship which comes with graphic design; and especially the manifestation of all our ideas onto a simple piece of paper. Recently, I have begun painting, both small and larger–scale works with a variety of themes. I wish to begin creating large–scale public murals which speak to both historic and contemporary times. I enjoy working with community or school groups to create a piece of art, using the mural process as a learning tool and the finished product as the illustration of many voices and ideas. I also like to work within smaller venues, like homes and businesses, creating both unique and memorable art pieces. My strong design skills and artistic vision, as well as my work ethic and project management abilities; make murals (both large and small) a perfect fit!
Recommendations:
October 5, 2009 — Maija McKnight Visual Public Arts Coordinator, City of Auburn "The City of Auburn Arts Commission contracted with Rachael Dotson in August 2009 to create a mural in Auburn’s downtown core on boarded up windows of a vacant building. Rachel was able to work within an extremely short timeline that included: initial concept, proposal presentation to the Arts Commission, working with various community groups and individuals, and concluding in a end product that the City is proud to have in Auburn’s downtown core. Rachael’s demeanor, flexibility and creativity were key to the success of this project and I would highly recommend her." ![]()
